Basketry - Booth #310
Where my first career in Engineering was born of necessity and has stood me in good stead, my second was born from the desire to create using natural elements, clay and reed. Each piece begins with a whisper of a design and a dream of what it can be. Then, an original, hand-crafted base is created of American or exotic woods, Ambrosia Maple, Red Oak, Padauk, Patagonian Rosewood, Canary, Zebra; their names evoking memories of the places that have inspired my creativity. I use reed and cane to build original pieces, creating only one unique piece. The final finish encapsulates the integrity of the piece and preserves it as an heirloom. I have been fortunate to have traveled extensively and those adventures through other cultures, and my natural surroundings, have greatly inspired my work.

These baskets are woven of locally collected Akebia vines and artist-dyed rattan reed using commercial, waterfast dyes. The techniques used are multi-element twining to achieve spiral and vertical patterns, and the artist's own "hairy" technique, where hundreds of short pieces of reed are woven into the walls of the baskets. All designs are original and all work is done by the artist.
