I was born in Japan and came to the United States to attend San Diego State University in CA. There, as an Art Major, I studied ceramics 1965-1970. I moved my studio to Basel, Switzerland for the next ten years. In 1981 I returned to the United States and joined a Cambridge Studio for 5 years. Now, I work from my Newton Studio. In 1984 I was elected a member of the Int. Academy of Ceramics (IAC) and in ’86 was awarded the Smithonian "Looking at Earth” prize. I create my textures by using a special throwing technique called Nanban; throwing from the inside without touching the outer surface in order to preserve the natural textures, which emerge as the pot spins on the wheel. Rough textured surfaces have an attraction for me because they can be perceived by more than one sense, by sight as well as by touch. I want my pot to have its own life as if it had emerged from the earth, breathing, to have its own movement, like the shifting of sand in the wind, or the flowing of molten lava.
