While many pieces are traditionally hand thrown, others are tediously shaped by hand. Through this technique I transform cylindrical pieces of rich brown stoneware clay into my unique altered forms.
Once the pottery has dried, I bisque fire them to approximately 1850 degrees Fahrenheit. This collection of my pottery is then sprayed with a woodash glaze I have been producing since 2005. This procedure is difficult due to the volatile nature of woodash glazes. However, my extra attention to detail in the glazing process produces beautiful results.
Finally all the pottery is fired a second time to over 2400 degrees FahFahrenheit in a reduction atmosphere. By creating an environment depleted of oxygen (the reduction atmosphere) the oxygen starved glazes become more vibrant and the claybody a rich warm brown. Altogether, these firings take a combined time of over 28 hours.
